Google confirmed this independently. In April 2025, the Google Search team stated that structured data provides an advantage in search results, including AI Overviews.

The message is precise: having Schema isn't enough. It needs to be complete and correctly implemented. Poor Schema does nothing — in some cases it's actively counterproductive, which we'll cover below.

That's the most direct on-record confirmation from any AI platform operator. It matters — it signals that Microsoft is actively building Schema comprehension into their systems.
The honest nuance: the Otterly GEO Experiment ran controlled tests across seven AI platforms and found that Microsoft Copilot citations did not increase after Schema implementation. What Microsoft intends and what the current measurement shows are not yet aligned. Schema is clearly on Microsoft's agenda — the validated citation lift, however, belongs to Google AI Overviews for now.
81% of AI-cited pages have Schema. But that's not why they get cited.
Digging into which Schema types the cited pages actually used: Person schema (author attribution) led at 58.9%, FAQPage at only 1.8%. Schema type alone doesn't determine citation — authority and content quality do. Schema is what makes that authority machine-readable.
Most sites with Schema aren't getting results — not because Schema doesn't work, but because the Schema they have is thin. A type declared, properties empty. Research consistently shows this kind of markup performs worse than no Schema at all.
The reason is straightforward: thin Schema sends contradictory signals. A page that claims to be an Article but provides no author, no date, no headline is harder for AI systems to process than a page that makes no structured claims at all. The markup creates noise without context. Complete Schema — with every relevant property populated — is what actually moves the needle. That means author, publication date, and topic for articles. Price, availability, and ratings for products. Specific questions and answers for FAQPage. Not just the type declaration, but the full semantic picture.
Additionally, the Otterly GEO Experiment found that adding FAQ content with proper FAQPage Schema produced 350% more AI citations (2,379 vs. 529). Content and Schema were optimised together — the effect can't be attributed to Schema alone, but Schema was part of the equation. (OtterlyAI, 2026)

Quality determines effect
Generic plugin-generated Schema with the type set but properties mostly empty is consistently worse than no Schema at all. Properties like price, rating, author, and date are not optional extras — they are the signal. The type declaration without the context is noise. Complete Schema, with every relevant property populated, is what actually moves the needle on Rich Results, AI Overviews, and Knowledge Graph anchoring.
Google AI Overviews is where it's proven
The +611% is real — and it's specific to Google. The Otterly GEO Experiment is the most comprehensive platform-specific validation available. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode showed strong positive effects. Other platforms — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude — did not show a direct Schema effect in the experiment. The honest strategy: optimise for Google AI Overviews first, let authority signals do the rest across other platforms.
Scale is the real problem
Manual Schema doesn't work at scale. 40–50% of AI-generated markup without a quality pipeline is invalid, factually wrong, or non-compliant. (LLM4Schema.org, peer-reviewed 2024) Incorrect Schema can trigger Google Manual Actions. The only realistic answer is automation with validation — generation, factuality checking, and compliance must run automatically, not once at setup, but on every content change.
